Journeys, vacations and a new lens !

Journal Entry: Sun May 20, 2012, 8:45 AM
Hi ! :)

A month ago, I was visiting my sister in New York (I live in Paris)... it was a great trip ! About photography, among other "classic NY pictures", I've been taking photos at the Bronx Zoo and in Central Park, of tigers and squirrels.
Sadly, while I was taking pictures at the zoo, the autofocus of my tele-lens (Sigma 70-300mm f4-5,6 APO macro) stopped working...

I haven't been very active recently because of all my vet exams but I'm now in vacations until... a 3 weeks training in July. And what a training ! :) It's a scientific trip in Himalaya mountains to study the wild snow panther !

... After my trip in New York, I couldn't think about anything else but buying a new lens for my incredible scientific journey : I needed it ! Here my hesitations started...

I was so much attracted by the Canon 70-200 f4 L USM... with the sharpness, the fast USM and the constant f4 aperture !
But, I finally decided to buy the Canon 70-300mm f4-5,6 IS USM. The dilemna was really big, but I thought it was a better lens for my training (100g lighter, longer focale, image stabilized and cheaper lens).
It was a so hard choice. I already have few regrets about the sharpness and the constant f4 aperture... whatever, the 70-300mm is at least such a better lens than my old Sigma. Well, we will see. I think I just need to take good pictures to be satisfied ! :)
Don't hesitate to give me your impressions about these lenses ! ;)

Little goodbye to my dear old Sigma lens :

Thank you for all the support ! Be sure I read every comment, and that I truly appreciate each :+fav: and each :+devwatch: !

Very interested in your lens judgement.
I now have a Tamron zoom lens which I don't like at all.
Unfortunately I have a Pentax camera, which went bust just after I bought the camera.
It has been so hard to try and find another zoom lens to fit my camera............any suggestions?
What I do not understand is why does it not have more than f4?

Hi, Jenny ! :)

Well I don't really know Pentax brand and I've never had any Tamron lenses, but I still can help you with the few things I know about zoom lenses :
Firstly, you have to choose the focal lentgh you will need (70-200 or 70-300 are easier and let you take lots of situation ; 400 (and more) if you prefer animal photography... well you still can take). Then you have to find a lens with a good aperture (the larger the better, but they are also more expensive). These two things are often easy to find... but then, you'll have to choose between different brands and models : sharpness, motorization (at least with Canon, I don't know where it is on Pentax cameras), weight, fabrication quality are important to compare.

I'm not sure I answered your question... ^^'

I think you have.................apparently Pentax is NOT out of business was taken over by ????????????

I always use this camera manually and I have such a 'tiny' bit of area where I can focus.
My cousin looked at it (professional photographer) and was mystified as to why I cannot change the f
I am going to get some clear answers soon...I hope.
OK.............maybe I do need a larger aperture.
Will 'get' it all one day.
Thank you SO much for taking the time to explain.

If you use it manually, can't you change the f/ in the aperture mode ? If your lense is limited to f/4, then you won't be able to have larger aperture than f/4 (where the depth of field is very shallow), but you are still able to get a smaller aperture, up to f/22 at least.

I am going to ask another photographer today or tomorrow!
Have already asked one and he couldn't figure out the problem either.
I can put it into other f mode BUT it won't stay!!!!!!

On verra ^^'
